Speaking to us at the beginning of our session today Robert le Gall, Roman Catholic Archbishop of Toulouse welcomed us and apologised that he would not be able to be with us for as much of the time as initially planned. He will travel to Paris tomorrow for the funeral of Cardinal Lustiger - himself a convert from Judaism to Christianity
Interestingly as a Benedictine he was involved with others in setting up a group called Monastics in Interreligious Dialogue. He wrote about his deep dialogue with a Tibetan Buddhist monk in "le Moine et le Lama".
He ended his words of welcome to us by reminding us that Toulouse is where Saint Thomas Aquinas is buried but also a place where the Albigensian crusade is remembered.
I think he was trying to say that Toulouse thus reprepsents profound Christian theological and spiritual enquiry and also the worst kind of Christian religious violent excess - but I suppose he was rather more subtle about it.
At some point I will try to put up an English translation of what he said.
